Never be too sure that the jeweler from whom you purchased your jewelery has not cheated you. The purity stated may be 18kt or 21 kt while in reality it may be much less. You will get to know that you have been cheated only when you go to resell it. A jeweler buying a piece of jewelery from you will not believe your words. Even if the purity of jewelery is mentioned, he will not go by it. He will himself test the piece. Testing is done by two methods
1) The touchstone acid method.
2) The scientifically-proven Karat meter.
All that glitters is not always pure Gold
This does not mean you can’t buy jewelery. Do yourself a favor .Take a few precautions to ensure that you are getting your money’s worth:
- Familiarize yourself with how to measure quality of gold, diamonds or other items which you may wish to purchase.
- When you buy gold,do not forget to take a receipt from the jeweler stating the weight, price and karat age (purity of gold). Keep the receipt with you.
- When you buy diamond ,look for the four Cs: Cut, color, Clarity and Carat Weight.
- There are some jewelers who hallmark their jewelery.
- Hallmarking is a process in which Hallmarked jewelry indicates that it has been officially evaluated and certified by the government and conforms to the purity stated. In Hallmarked Jewelry a mark/ stamp is applied on the jewelry by a government-recognized association.
- And, of course, there is branded jewelery which is mostly authentic. You can always trust a branded jewelry provider.
- Get information on guarantees, warranties and returns. Jewelry is a major investment, so be sure whether your purchase is guaranteed and whether your purchase price can be refunded if you wish to return the item.
- The internet looks like a dangerous place when you think of the ways in which people are getting conned these days , and hence it does not seem like a safe place to purchase something as expensive and special as jewelry. But there are ways to dodge these scams and buy your jewelry, over the net. In fact there are many advantages of buying online, which are not available elsewhere. There are certain dos and don’ts of Internet shopping which you need to follow.
- If you know all about diamonds, from the color to the cut, from the carat to the quality, then it is unlikely that you will be taken for a ride. For caution, you could always search the net for reviews given by previous customers about that specific company .You can also confirm with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to check whether there have been any grievances or scams in the past.
- You are advised to take your time and buy from a well known company instead of buying from a small time company where jewelry may not be branded.
