1. Choose your jeweler carefully. Know the jeweler you’re dealing with. Check out new or unfamiliar sellers with the BBB(Better Business Bureau) .Check your state or local consumer protection agency also.
2. Get It In Writing: Ask the jeweler to put all the details like the weight, color, clarity and measurements of the piece of jewelry in writing on your receipt to give you proof .Also get the name and address of the seller; how much is the product or service cost; what else is included in that price and the cancellation and return policy. Beware of the jeweler who is not willing to put in writing all the specific grades and details of jewelry you are purchasing.
3. Request receipts that lists all the items u purchased and the prices you paid. If the shop is going to ship, get the shipping receipt which includes insurance for both loss and damages.
4. Check with the BBB:Call up ur local Better Business Bureau (that’s listed in your phone book) to learn if the jeweler has any outstanding complaints from any of the customers.
5. Don’t go for Big Sales:Never trust sales or clearances of any kind. Beware of stores that advertise extravagant sales, such as “50% off. Some stores tend to list extremely high “regular” prices so that they can offer huge discounts.
6. Avoid buying through ads, catalogs, or promotions of any kind that do not provide all the information you need to make an well informed purchase.Don’t fall for advertisements that proclaim only the carat weight and not the other qualities of the jewels. (This always happens in TV ads)
7. Beware of retailers who do not discuss all the qualities of their jewelry. When shopping for diamonds, Beware of retailers who dont give on all the 4 Cs, even when you have expressed an interest.
8. Don’t assume that it’s a bargain price if it’s on the web. Many online retailers and auction sites do not comply with the FTC guidelines. The Federal Trade Commission found that many online jewelry retailers were misrepresenting carat weights and not disclosing information about gem treatments.
9. Beware of insurance appraisals ,given on fancy letterhead, that do not completely describe your jewelry. The purpose of the insurance appraisal is to accurately and completely describe the piece of jewelry being insured ,incase u ever need to file a claim.
10. Be sure u have the option of returning the jewelry u purchased ,within a limited period of time. This allows you to return the jewelry if the jewelry is faulty or not up to the mark.
11. When shopping online,Never ever enter your personal information in a pop-up screen. And always Keep the documentation of your order.
12. Try to take pictures of your purchases. Its always better to take photos of your major purchases,. Better still, take a photo of the seller holding the item, just in case you later need to identify the person with whom you dealt while shopping.
13. When shopping online, use credit card payments to protect yourself against scams. If you are ever victimized, report the problem to your credit card company or insurance company and also to the police. Most probably,u will get satisfactory results.
