Here are some handy tips for young mothers who are going to start breastfeeding their little ones.
- Nurse the baby immediately after birth. It may difficult for both the mother and the baby in the beginning for the first latch on. But once your baby attempts suckling repeatedly he will get it the right way.
- Hold your baby’s tummy close to yours and his chin to your breast. You can either sit and feed him or feed him lying down.
- Tickle your baby’s lips with your finger or your nipple and you can see her immediately searching for her target.
- Ensure that your baby’s mouth covers your entire nipple. Its easier for the baby that way and it can suck more effectively.
- Some new born may just pretend to feed by keeping their mouths at the breast and not sucking. While you may still be assuming that the baby is well fed, you can hear them scream in hunger in a while. So make sure that you feel the baby suck.
- The nipples may be tender for the first few days after the baby’s birth. But the pain goes away once the milk flow begins. If you still continue to have a lot of pain please consult your doctor
- It is ok for you to feed the baby in public. All you will need is a blanket to cover up and a comfortable place to sit and feed the baby.
- If you are going to be away from the baby you can express breast milk and leave it in bottles for the care taker to feed the baby in your absence.
- To express breast milk you can follow the manual method or choose to buy a breast pump. Loads of which are available in the market. But before buying one make sure that you understand your need because each type of pump fulfils different kinds of needs.
- When you are feeding the baby make sure that you have a proper diet that has high content of nutrition and less oil and spice. Drink lots of water. Do not take drugs while breastfeeding unless recommended by a physician.
- When you are going out, you can always carry the baby in a sling. That way the baby will feel safe close to you and you will not have to bother about the hassle of carrying him in your arms for long time
- Do not use artificial nipples.
- Breastfeed the baby on demand. Do not set specific intervals to feed the baby. The more you feed the more good it does to the baby’s health.
- Drink a glass of water when you sit down to nurse. This will ensure that your baby drinks enough fluids.
- Do not wear tight fitting clothes at least for the first few weeks after your baby’s birth. It may aggravate soar nipples.
- Good luck and happy breast feeding!
