Torn or detached nail is common with sportspersons especially those who play football or soccer where the foot is mostly utilized. However, it can also come about just by accident alone. A torn out nail or a completely detached one can leave you in deep pain and discomfort. Knowing how to treat it first hand can help you prevent serious infection.

First Aid for Torn or Detached Nail
This is how you need to treat a torn or detached nail:

  • File or trim the edges of a torn nail because that will help in rescuing your toenail from further injury and tearing when clothes or fabric get stuck around the rough edges
  • For a large tear you can trim it or just leave it the way it is but trimming would help
  • Cover the nail with a bandage or adhesive till the nail grows long enough to cover the nail bed
  • A detached nail eventually falls off when a new nail grows so you can leave it as it is
  • Soak feet in cold water for 20 minutes after trimming the nail
  • Apply an antibiotic and cover the toe with a bandage

What you need to be very careful about is to prevent a nail infection for which you need to prevent any further damage or injury to the torn or detached nail and to clean the nail bed always. This will help heal the nail faster. Consult a doctor if you cannot manage the cleaning or trimming by yourself.
