Babies are most likely to choke on their own vomit. You could help by trying to remove the cause but doing so can get very tricky. Be sure not to touch the base of the throat or to push the object too far inside.
First Aid to Stop Choking in Babies
Two theories are used to stop choking in babies that is:
- The Heimlich maneuver theory works well here too. Make the baby lie flat on the stomach on one of your arms and with the heel of your other hand give sharp blows on the back to clear the cause that is causing the baby to choke. Check to see if the obstruction is coughed up or not. You may have to give chest thrust if the object is still confined inside.
- For chest thrusts, lay the baby down facing you and put two fingers just one finger away and below the nipples. Give four thrusts to about an inch and wait for the baby to throw up the obstruction. Call emergency after doing this thrice.
- Start compressions if the baby does not breathe and check the mouth within every set
Usually the baby coughs up what it maybe choking on. But sometimes objects have to be removed carefully. Call emergency services after administering the above immediate measures to stop choking in babies.
