Gout is a form of excruciating pain that occurs at the joint of the base of the big toe. However, gouts can also occur in other joints such as the knee, elbow, shoulders, wrists and the hands. Joints swell and can be accompanied with fever and chills.

Safety Tips for Gout
Follow these steps to treat gout and once you’ve seen the physician:

  • Avoid putting any weight on the affected joint (stay off your feet for a while to prevent further damage)
  • Raise the joint to reduce swelling
  • Immobilize the joint with a splint
  • Non-prescribed non-inflammatory drugs can be taken to reduce the pain and swelling
  • AVOID cold or hot compressors (gout does not respond too well to ice or heat)
  • Wear shoes that fit well and are comfortable

Gout is not life-threatening though the condition causes acute pain. However, proper diagnosis and treatment of the joint and medication is necessary.
