Being successful in life is every person’s dream. Workplace success largely depends on productivity and compatibility with co-workers. Employers and employees both need to contribute equally to succeed. The job market is constantly changing and the need for skilled and talented individuals is at an all time high. But are talent and skill the only two factors that contribute in workplace success? Or does being talented mean that an individual will be successful eventually?

Employers have realised that a prospective employee needs much more than talent and skill to be successful and productive. So what are the factors that would help one be successful at work?

You can be a fresher taking up your first job or a seasoned employee looking for a job change or a senior manager who’s looking to improve your career graph. According to feedback from employers and employees, the following factors are considered most important to be successful at work.

Giving and Taking Feedback
This is the most important factor. This applies to both the employees and employers.

Employees: Be open to feedback with a positive mindset. Feedback is the best way to know about the areas needing improvement. Feedback can be “In-your-face” at times. Do not take it to heart. Feedback also covers all your achievements and accomplishments. Strive to be better.

Employers: Giving feedback can be really tough. As employers, you need to put the message across and yet not be rude. Constructive feedback is the best. Provide solutions when you pick out a problem. Sit down and discuss with your employees. Being rude and blunt does not help much. Explaining your stand and charting out steps to do better will be mutually beneficial.

Avoid bringing personal problems to work
The most common problem faced at the workplace is mixing personal life with professional life. It is most important to maintain balance between the both. Ensure that you give your 100% at work. There may be times when personal issues may be bothering you. Don’t let it overshadow your work on a daily basis.

Avoid office politics
At times, you may be tempted to listen to the juicy gossip from a co-worker about your boss. Avoid such situations. This can prove disastrous to your career. Gossip and politics is best left to the gossip mongers. Give priority to your work and do not get involved in such tacky situations.

Be Assertive
Being assertive at work ensures that you are not overburdened with work and get due credit for your contribution. Set reasonable goals and work towards achieving them.

Apart from the above factors, a few more points help in being successful at work.

  • Be cordial and polite to your co-workers
  • Be helpful
  • Be punctual
  • Be willing to learn and improvise
  • Avoid showdowns or arguments

These factors contribute a great deal in being successful and also help in an individuals personal life. You can always keep improving and find your own success mantra.
