Quitting your job can be a really tough decision. There may be a lot of reasons for quitting your job – good and bad included. You need to think of what you want to do next, how you plan to do it and set long term goals. What are the things that you need to consider before taking the final decision?
Take a Decision
Most people find it very hard to take a decision when it comes to quitting their jobs. If your job offers you a good salary and you have the company of good co-workers, it is even more difficult to quit your job. Plan well and set your priorities. Decide on what you want to do next. If you intend to pursue your long time hobby or plan to take a break for a while, decide on what would be your future course of action.
If you plan to quit your job due to harassment or a lesser pay package or due to some other reason, start looking for a better job. It is advisable to quit your job only after you have something else planned up. Once you have a good offer in hand, inform the management of your decision.
Do not take a hasty decision based on emotions. You would probably end up depressed if you cannot find another job soon. That coupled with dwindling finances can make you frustrated. Be patient and wise before taking a decision.
Convey your Decision
Once you have made up your mind and taken a firm decision, it’s time to convey your decision to the management and colleagues. Be diplomatic and explain your stand. Let them know the date when you plan to quit. Give them ample time for it. Do not think of going back on your decision if your company offers you a hike or any other perks. If you are offered a well deserved promotion and other perks after your decision to resign, you might want to rethink about it. You might find yourself in the same position after a year or two. You are the best judge.
If you find yourself confused and still think that you are getting a better deal, ask for time to think about it. Weigh your options and make a rational decision. Discuss with the management about your reasons for quitting the job and what you would expect in the future. If you are assigned work, aim to finish it. Better still, find someone who would take over after you or leave the decision to the management.
Plan your Finances
This is the most important thing to be considered if you plan on quitting your job. You might have some savings or no savings at all. If you have taken a loan then you might need a regular source of income to make payments. Plan for your health insurance too. Once you quit a job, your previous employer will stop paying for your health insurance. Have some money saved up for any emergency or unexpected situations.
Leave On a Good Note
It’s always better to leave on a good note. Maintain good relations with your former boss and colleagues. If they have a requirement for you any time in the future, they would love to work with you again. Companies also do a background check before employing people. It would feel good to get a positive feedback from your former colleagues and also add value.
