“You are fired!!!!”… Haven’t we heard this term many times in our life? Be it in movies, television shows, comics and lastly in our own personal lives. If you are one of the lucky few who hasn’t faced this term in your personal life, then you are privileged. Unfortunately, for most people out there, coping with a job loss can be really tough. The recent economic downturn has resulted in a lot of people losing their jobs and facing an uncertain future.

Losing a job and being faced with an uncertain future often gives way to depression and low morale. Along with the job, a person’s confidence, self respect and future also take a beating. But is this the end? Does losing a job cost a person everything? What next? How can a person move on with life? These are some of the questions faced by people who lost their job.

Accept

The first step towards overcoming this situation is to accept the fact that you have lost your job. Being laid off has many reasons to it. It could be poor performance, downsizing etc. You have to ask yourself “Why have I been laid off?” Most people tend to be judgemental and blame the organization or their superiors for it. Get over it and think rationally. Identify areas where you could have improved or worked hard on. No company would want to lose a good employee except for a strong reason to do so.

There could be cases where you were victimized and laid off in an unjust manner. The best thing to do is to plan ahead instead of brooding over it. You wouldn’t want to continue working in such a place anyways.

Plan

Planning for the future is most important. Plan your finances and chalk out the plan. If you want to switch careers then enrol yourself for courses which help you pick up those skills. You might also want to relocate. Check all the options. Do your research and narrow down on a few options. The most important thing is to learn from your past. Improvise and work hard on your weak areas. This will prepare you to face new challenges and a new career.

Spread the word

Let people know that you are looking out for a job. Network and meet people. Be truthful and tell them that you have been laid off from your previous job. Also tell them your long-term goals and how do you plan to achieve them. A prospective employer would judge you based on your skill set and integrity rather than your past. All that matters is honesty and passion for the job.

Do not let a few rejections disappoint you. Keep trying and think positive. Be open to new options and give it your best.
